Dear Delegate of the Special Conference,
Welcome to the 2007 Special Conference on Investing in Youth (SCIY)!
We are Merve Gürel, Charlotte Foerster-Baldenius, Silvia Christopher and Robert Reifeld, and will be guiding you through this year’s BERMUN conference as Presidents and Rapporteur.
We are making several significant changes to the structure and role of the Special Conference this year. The Special Conference will now serve solely as an advisory body to the plenary session of the General Assembly and be comprised of two subcommittees. The Governmental Subcommittee will be made up of countries, as would a usual MUN-committee. The Non-governmental Subcommittee will contain a number of selected NGOs.
You, the Special Conference Delegates, will function as experts on this year’s theme of Investing in Youth: Empowering Future Generations. Your task will be to formulate an official Recommendation to the General Assembly, which will serve as basis for the General Assembly’s plenary work on Saturday. Due to the fact that your work will only pertain to one topic (the entire conference theme) it is all the more important that you research the topic extensively.
We sent out a Special Conference Information Packet to all MUN Directors before the summer. At the end of this document you will find a link to the same Packet. The Information Packet contains detailed explanations on what changes have been made to the Special Conference, and how this new approach is designed to work. If you have not yet done so, please read the Packet carefully. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
We will also be sending out a Research Guide on the conference theme around the end of September. Once the guide is sent out, it will also be available on the BERMUN website. We expect you to read it thoroughly in addition to your own research and hope it will help you in your preparation.
Since the Special Conference will be working on the Recommendation instead of writing resolutions, we expect every delegate to come to the conference with prepared ideas on what the Recommendation could include, in writing.
Lastly, please remember that your work in the Special Conference is vital to the outcome, not only of the SCIY, but the outcome of the entire General Assembly, and thus, in a sense, the conference as a whole. If you have any questions, or need any help in matters related to the SCIY, we expect you to contact us at specialconference[at]bermun.de!
Sincerely,
Robert Reifeld – President of the Special Conference
Charlotte Foerster-Baldenius – Deputy President of the Special Conference
Merve Gürel – Deputy President of the Special Conference
Silvia Christopher – Rapporteur to the General Assembly
