How can I Prepare for the Conference?
During the event, the YA will devote its attention to four major areas:
- An assessment of the HIV/AIDS situation in the countries which you represent;
- A presentation of strategies and lessons learnt on the international level on how to prevent and combat HIV/AIDS in developing and developed countries;
- The application of the international strategies/programs presented in the forum to specific country situations and country strategies, followed by joint discussions on what approaches should be taken in your specific country;
- Lastly, the selection of a project/program in one of the eastern European countries represented in the YA which will be supported by a modest fund-raising activity and subsequent involvement.
As you know, the Youth Assembly is a particular component of a broader conference which takes place here in Berlin at the John F. Kennedy School. The Youth Assembly on HIV/AIDS will hold separate working sessions, but will – at the same time – be an integral part of the BERMUN conference. That means, we will also join the BERMUN General Assembly and give statements. We might also liaise with specialized committees of the BERMUN conference. And we will present our findings and proposals for further action to the concluding session of the BERMUN General Assembly. We the YA members need to decide on just what form this presentation should take. Come with suggestions and ideas!
In order for you to enjoy the four days, make a meaningful contribution to the conference, and, we hope, carry ideas and strategies home with you about ways to tackle the problems discussed, it is essential that you be well prepared for our challenging task ahead. We have therefore formulated guiding questions about the HIV/AIDS situation in your countries.
It is essential that you come well prepared with a country assessment addressing the HIV/AIDS situation and the existing programs (prevention and curative). The prepared list of guiding questions in the attachment will assist you in writing your country assessment. Remember, you can always add to the proposed questions. We encourage you to investigate the situation in your country firsthand. Conduct interviews and collect personal accounts and statistics which highlight the conditions in your country. Remember, the better prepared you are for the Youth Assembly, the more successful you will be in November.
It is your Assembly and its success depends on your input so please do research in your country on the specific situation and on HIV/AIDS programs.
What is Expected of Me During the Conference?
Specifically, we will ask you to make a 20 minute presentation to the Youth Assembly about your country and its HIV/AIDS programs. If there are several members from your country, you should contact each other prior to the conference in order to agree on the outline and messages of your presentation. In addition, you will have time on Wednesday, November 16th, to get together and work out details. We will ask each country group to make a joint presentation. The presentations will take place on November 17th in the afternoon. A preliminary conference program will be posted on the YA website.
